Central High School Named AP STEM and AP STEM Achievement School

Central High School has been named to the Georgia Department of Education AP STEM and AP STEM Achievement School list by the College Board.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are collegelevel courses offered by trained high school teachers in the regular high school setting. Central High School offers students AP courses in English, science, math, calculus and statistics, World History, U.S. History, and psychology. Nearly 350 students complete coursework in the AP sections offered at Central High School. Of those students, roughly 200 students took the AP test after completing the course.

AP STEM Schools are schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses, such as AP Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics, or AP Computer Science.

AP STEM Achievement Schools are schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses, at least 40% of the exam scores on the AP math and AP science exams earning scores of 3 or higher.

Principal Mr. Jared Griffis said, “I am especially proud of the AP STEM Achievement School designation. Central had 50% of the students in our AP math and AP science classes score a 3 or higher on their AP exams. 33% scored a 4 or higher. I could not be more proud of the efforts of our great students and teachers. We will continue to ensure that Central High School offers students premier academic opportunities such as our Advanced Placement program.”

Central High School was named one of five (5) statewide AP Champion Award winning schools in early January. The College Board in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Education selected Central High School for the award based on the school’s efforts to eliminate barriers that restrict access to AP courses, evidence of the school’s effort to reflect diversity in the school’s population by the enrollment of all students in AP courses, and for sustaining a positive culture celebrating both the students participation and success in the Advanced Placement Program.
