Central High School has been named as one of only five high schools in the state of Georgia as an AP Champion Award school. The College Board in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Education selected Central High School as an award recipient based on the following considerations.

? The activity reflects the school’s efforts toward eliminating barriers that restrict access to AP courses for students from ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic groups that have been traditionally underserved.

? There is evidence of efforts to ensure that AP classes at the school reflect the diversity of the school’s student population.

? The activity illustrates intentions to build and sustain a positive culture around AP courses by celebrating both student participation and success.

? The activity was creative in promoting AP courses and encourages, engages, and excites students.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college-level courses offered by trained high school teachers in the regular high school setting. Central High School offers students AP courses in English, science, math, calculus and statistics, World History, U.S. History, and psychology. Nearly 350 students complete coursework in the AP sections offered at Central High School. Of those students, roughly 200 students took the AP test after completing the course.

“Many of our AP students are also in the Dual Enrollment program with local colleges and universities,” stated Dr. Donna Simpson, Central High School Senior Guidance Counselor. She continued, “We find our advanced, driven students excel in their courses at the University of West Georgia and West Central Technical College, as well as in the AP courses taught on our campus.” Principal Mr. Jared Griffis commented, “Central High School prides itself in being able to offer so many advanced options to students. We encourage all students to take part in the AP program or Dual Enrollment options offered with our local post-secondary schools.”
