Providence Elementary School Students Showcased in Georgia Standards of Excellence Framework

Emily Higdon and Carter Kittrell of Providence Elementary School were showcased in the Georgia Standards of Excellence Framework for fifth grade math.

Their work is shown as an example of the type of work that should be expected from fifth graders engaged in three act tasks. These types of tasks are consistently used in Providence's fifth grade math classes to help students apply their math knowledge to solve problems. In this task, students worked to determine how many pennies would fill a cube that was presented in the problem. Diane Trantham, PES 5th grade math teacher, explains that by using their understanding of decimals and volume, along with their ability to make sense of problems and persevere to solve them, students were able to determine the number of pennies that filled the cube.

Their work was added this summer during the revision of the frameworks.
