Mt. Zion Elementary School hosted the annual Mt. Zion Cluster STEM Camp on June 22, 2015. MZES and MZMS partnered to create a rigorous week of STEM activities. The weeklong camp was offered to students in grades 3 rd -8 th with students exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics topics. Students participated in many different activities including robotics, computer programming, and science experiments.
The robotics group created robots using LEGO Education WeDo and LEGO Education Mindstorms Robots. Students had to first create the robots and then program them on a computer. Robots moved according to many different sensors that were available to be programmed. The sensors included ultrasonic sound, touch, and light sensors.
Students also experimented with computer programming, coding, science, and mathematics. During the week students created many different objects including Rocket Straws, Egg Carton Helicopters, and Makey Makeys. Students were able to understand when developing an experiment, that trial and error are used to help make adjustments along the way.
Twenty-one students attended the Mt. Zion Cluster STEM camp led by Melissa Trippe and Heather Hurston from Mt. Zion Elementary School and Heather Morse and Tewanna Brown from Mt. Zion Middle School.
