Glanton-Hindsman Hosts Camp REACH

On June 12 Glanton-Hindsman Elementary started its annual Camp REACH, a literacy camp sponsored by the school for the benefit of Glanton-Hindsman Students. An enthusiastic group of 120 students enjoyed Kona Ice snacks, storytelling, art, and computer based learning on the first day of camp. Camp REACH will meet most Tuesdays and Thursdays during summer through July 21st. A complete list of camp dates is available on the GHES website. “We are delighted to have our students back in our school this summer for Camp REACH,” commented Beth Chandler, Principal of Glanton-Hindsman Elementary. “We are fortunate to have a dedicated group of teachers who are committed to student enrichment, and who are willing to give some of their summer to serve the students in our community,” said Chandler.

The camp is run by volunteer teachers, parents, and BETA Club volunteers from Villa Rica middle schools. “Our primary goal is to prevent academic loss, especial in reading, over the summer months, but in addition to that we want to provide a pleasurable, safe summertime experience for our students.” said teacher Julie Hursey, Camp REACH Director. Students at the camp are treated to a variety of guest readers, thematic art activities, computer-based learning games, and the opportunity to read and take Accelerated Reading tests to gain points toward next year’s reading goals. Prizes for high AR point earners, including several bikes, scooters, and book bags will be awarded on the last day of camp. Some of upcoming themes for summer include Camp Read S’more, Sensational Serpents, and fun With Horses.

Camp REACH is open to all students of Glanton-Hindsman free of charge. Partial funding for Camp REACH was provided through a generous donation from the Fairfield Kiwanis Club. A snack and lunch are provided daily through the Carroll County Summer Lunch Program. Questions concerning the camp may be sent to julie.hursey@carrollcountyschools.com.
