Roopville Elementary Hosts a "History of Roopville" Reception

Roopville Elementary hosted a "History of Roopville" reception on February 10 for staff and community members. Principal, Cherri LeBlanc, recognized groups that have contributed to Roopville's success through the years including past and present RES staff, students, and parents, Board Chairman, Dr. Jon Anderson, Roopville Mayor, Bob Merrell, members of the Roopville City Council, and members of the Roopville Historical Society. Part of the program was a tribute to the late Mr. Alvin Chambers. Mr. Chambers was principal of Roopville Elementary for 19 years and was the principal when the school moved from the old Roopville School building to the present building. Mr. Chambers' wife, Virginia, and son, George were present at the ceremony. Retired Roopville teacher, Mrs. Emily Huckeba, spoke about the rich history of the school and Mr. Scott Cowart, spoke about how the tradition of excellence has continued through the years. PTO president, Bryant Turner, made closing remarks thanking the RES staff, Mr. Cowart, and the Roopville community for working together to make Roopville Elementary a continued success. A "History of Roopville" display board was unveiled for the first time in the school's lobby. The display highlights the school's history dating back to 1851 to 1976 when the school moved to it's present location.
