Carroll County Schools Assists the Georgia Department of Corrections with Book Initiative

Carroll County Schools recently partnered with the Douglas County School District and other school districts across the state during the month of December to assist the Georgia Department of Corrections in their 100,000 Books Initiative. Through a series of donations, purchases, and drives, the GA Department of Corrections’ goal is to provide 100,000 books for Georgia’s correctional facilities as part of an overarching goal of improving the education system of the correctional facilities by focusing on literacy acquisition for inmates. This particular program will have its greatest impact on the inmate reentry process. With the help of their communities, the Carroll County and Douglas County School Districts donated more than 100 boxes of books. Mr. Scott Cowart, Superintendent of Schools for Carroll County stated, “This endeavor is another great example of school systems, their employees and their communities partnering together with the common goal of providing for the greater good of all of our citizens”. Mr. Anthony G. Jenkins, Director of Programs for the Georgia Department of Corrections thanked the school systems for their work on this project and commented,” The underpinning of this initiative is that reading is the basic foundation that opens doors to lots of opportunities and gives our inmates a head start on their continued education.” Citizens interested in making a donation should contact Director Jenkins at the State Offices South at Tift College, 300 Patrol Road, Forsyth, GA or via email at jenkia02@dcor.state.ga.us.
