Mt. Zion Elementary School Hosts Eagle Innovation STEM Camp

Mt. Zion Elementary hosted the Eagle Innovation Camp June 23-27, 2014, as an extension of Carroll County’s STEM initiative. Students new to the camp thoroughly enjoyed learning the fundamentals of robotics using the LEGO WeDo Robotics program, as they developed and programmed robots with movement and sound. They created structures such as a drumming monkey, a moving goalie, and an airplane with a spinning propellor. Advanced students were able to build on their prior knowledge of robotics as they worked with the LEGO Mindstorm Kits. This program taught students how sensors can be built into robots and given commands such as kicking a ball and distinguishing between light and dark surfaces. Along with the robotics programs, students participated in several other activities to learn about all areas of STEM. Using technology, students learned about computer programming to create an Angry Birds game. They also gained an insight into writing Java Script as they learned how to draw pictures and color by writing code. A Rubber Band Cannon experiment was conducted by students incorporating scientific, mathematical, and engineering skills. Students launched a variety of rubber bands at different angles to find which combination would result in the farthest distance, and a competition was held to see which group could launch one the farthest. The camp attendees were also excited to engineer their own balloon helicopters, as well as build a structure using recycled materials to protect an egg in the egg drop project. This camp was a great overall learning experience for the students. Teachers Melissa Trippe and Tiffany Harrell served as leaders of the Eagle Innovation STEM camp.
